On such a day as this, I never imagined I would hear a room full of Japanese people say “Japan and America, we are one!”

      But I did…

    • Travel Tuesdays – unexpected journeys

Posted at 9:39 pm by missannsays, on July 30, 2013

Tomorrow I am flying to Japan. That is totally insane. I am traveling to Japan as a representative of the 9/11 Tribute Center. That is also beyond anything I could have ever imagined. I have the opportunity to travel to Japan as part of the 2nd International Outreach Program for School Children and Community Survivors of 3/11 Great East Japan Disasters. I am humbled, excited and amazed. Thank you Tribute Center for allowing me to represent you. Thank you to American Airlines for donating the flights. Thank you to the Japan Society and the Rotary Club for your part in this venture.

This past week Bruce would have celebrated his 60th birthday. I have a feeling he is looking down and saying “that’s my girl. Keep up the good work.” He was my biggest supporter. Years ago for some totally bizarre, bratty reason I said to him “You know, you really need to get a ministry.” And without blinking an eye he responded “I have a ministry. My ministry is you.” And in that moment I realized that I was able to do all the things I did because of his love and support. Thank you Bruce for the life we shared and thank you for the life your sacrifice has given me. Love you!!!

FYI: I will post additional England adventures and photos when I get home from Japan. I hope to post about Japan as it unfolds.

Squad 41 is written on the Last Column. I knew for years Squad 41 was written on it but it wasn’t until October of 2011 that I knew why. Members of Squad 41 marked the location of where Bruce’s body and others from Squad 41 were found. Squad 41 was the first thing written on the column.

1000 years what have you seen, who has walked through your doors – rich, poor, male, female, child, adult, believer or not? Have they come to find peace, comfort, out of curiosity, for photo ops, or for history lessons? Have they stopped to pray, to reflect, to wonder or not? Do they ponder the past, the present or the future? Do they know life has happened here? Oh, if your walls could talk? What would they say? Would your stories remind us that all through time people have laughed and cried here? Been baptized and buried. Would your past reveal that times change but people don’t? Would your walls tell of young and old sleeping instead of listening? Or marveling and understanding?Would the worries of their days block the power of the message? Has the truth been taught? Has the one you were built to honor been glorified in your midst? I think He has. Those who built you knew they may not live to see the building finished but they built you anyway. Oh, what a lesson is taught by the fact you still stand and His word still is spoken.

    • Travel Thursdays – S1E15- Edinburgh, Scotland

Posted at 11:12 am by missannsays, on July 11, 2013

Started this post very late on Tuesday and was too tired to finish. Then no internet on Wednesday thus Travel Thursday 🙂

I am just finishing up a delightful six days in Edinburgh, Scotland. My girls and their guys joined me for family vacation 2013. We did a lot of walking, wandering, and exploring. We visited a few of the “must sees”. We didn’t see it all but we saw and experienced wonderful places while spending time together. Doesn’t get better than that.

We rented an apartment on the Royal Mile. The Royal Mile is the road that runs from Edinburgh Castle to Holyrood Palace. There are many historical sites, shops, restaurants, and street performers. On our first full day here we walked from our apartment to Holyrood Palace. The royal standard was flying meaning the Queen was in residence. We didn’t see her but it was fun to think we could have. From Holyrood Palace we walked over to Arthur’s Seat and climbed the “hill”. Wow!! What a beautiful view of the city. Wow! I am out of shape!?! We made it up the mountain but to the top was much further than any of others wanted to go so we descended the other side and headed in the direction of Sheep Heid Inn, the oldest pub in Edinburgh. There was a little wandering but the walk even though long was very scenic and we did eventually make our way to the Inn. Besides being the oldest pub in Edinburgh it was recently featured on the Amazing Race. The food was delicious and the journey back to our apartment was not as long as feared.

Our second day was more walking and included New Town. New Town is on the other side of Princes Street Gardens and down hill from the castle mound. When Old Town was becoming too overcrowded the wealthy moved to the lower land and built impressive sandstone homes. That was between 1765 – 1850. New is a relative term. The Royal Botanical Gardens were a short walk from New Town. Short is a relative term as well. The Royal Botanical Gardens were lovely and offered shady areas to pause before exploring more paths, ponds and patches of flowers.

I assumed the third day would be more sitting than walking but actually it was a perfect balance of sitting and walking. We took a bus tour of the Highland Lochs, Glens and a Whiskey Distillery. Our bus driver and tour guide was named Sarah. She offered excellent information and was a good storyteller. The tour was only 16 people. It really had a wonderful balance of time spent on the bus and time spent exploring the sights. An interesting little occurrence, we drove through Dunblane within moments of Andy Murray winning Wimbledon. Dunblane was where Andy Murray attended primary and high school. Our Scottish tour guide was very excited about his win.

Our fourth day included the Royal Yacht Britannia. We took public transportation to the Ocean Terminal and then followed the signs to the second floor. After wandering for a moment, I remembered that the in the UK the first floor is the ground floor so we still needed to go up one more flight. Oh, the little things can confuse you when traveling. Later in the day was more walking to explore the side streets off the Royal Mile.

Tuesday was visit the Castle with my second cousin (or is it first cousin once removed). Amazing views from castle mound. A piece of historical trivia for you, Edinburgh Castle looks like the perfect castle- built up high so you can see your enemies coming. There was only one problem. They couldn’t dig a well deep enough to get enough water so if they were under siege they had to surrender or die of thirst. I also ventured with my cousin and her hubby to Rosslyn Abby. Very interesting. The tour guide was excellent. She presented the information and allowed you to draw your own conclusions. Rosslyn Abby has many stories/legends regarding templar knights, freemasons and Dan Brown books. Before the Da Vinci Code was written they had maybe 30,000 visitors a year. Since they have at least a 1,000 a day.

We (not necessarily me) enjoyed local delicacies. Kyle and Scott both had Haggis. Of course fish and chips was consumed. In 2013, it isn’t served in newspaper. Emily and I had scones and clotted cream. Ice cream cones with a flake were eaten more than once. Pots of tea for the ladies and a little whiskey for the men. And British chocolate – yummy!

Wednesday meant the end of family vacation. I am so grateful to have been able to spend a week with my girls and their guys. I was blest to explore new places and revisit sights with new eyes. Farewell, Scotland. I hope to be back. Now onto Oxford my birthplace.

    • Travel Tuesdays – S1 E14 – Edinburgh – QOTD

Posted at 6:43 pm by missannsays, on July 9, 2013

“Mom, you aren’t one of those people are you???” Said with a look of horror as I pulled my iPad mini out to take a photo. In my defense, my phone had no more storage and I wanted to post to FB.

“When you have kids, you can tell them “Grandma, already climbed Arthur’s Seat. She is going to wait at the bottom and buy us ice cream when we are done.” To which Emily replied “I am going to tell them mom and dad are already climbed, you go ahead.” And later in the day, Meghan asked “Mom, when do we get ice cream.”

Me while crossing street “I get so confused with one way streets, driving on the other side. I am just not sure which direction I am going to hit from.”

Meghan starts doing movement like she is playing a violin. I ask “what are you doing?”. Meghan “I am playing the music.” Confused look by all and then laughter to the point of crying. Note: through our window you could hear bagpipes.

Duh moment – thinking Marks and Spencer’s had closed and then realizing it had been rebranded as M&S. Blame jet lag. More Edinburgh stories and tips to follow.

    • Travel Tuesdays – S1E13 – Indianapolis, IN

Posted at 10:10 pm by missannsays, on June 25, 2013

My current visit to Indianapolis,IN marks my fourth visit to this fine city. We drove through Indianapolis on one of our Kansas trips many years ago. At that time I saw the camp ground and the Indianapolis Children’s Museum. My girls loved the Children’s Museum. Twelve years ago I visited Indianapolis with Bruce and my girls for General Convention/Assembly for the Church of the Nazarene. That is the same reason I am in Indianapolis this week. I have attended plenary sessions, workshops, committee meetings and worship services. I have established a morning hotel routine of getting coffee from Starbucks and checking my email, etc. while seating in the lobby. (Free wi-fi is available in the lobby) I appreciate the ease of getting to the convention center via the walkway from my hotel. Did you know that “50% of the US population lives within an eight-hour drive of Indy”? Probably why it is a good place for a convention.

Yesterday I had a free afternoon so I decided to go for a walk to explore a little. I didn’t want to head towards the shopping area. The temptation to purchase unnecessary items or even necessary things would have been great so no shopping. I had read in the Indy Visitor Guide in my hotel room that there was a canal running through the city. Really?!? I didn’t know there was a canal. I have been here three times before and never knew that. So I set off to find the canal which it turns out was very close to my hotel. It is a lovely area with gardens and many of the museums back onto it. There were people in rented paddle boats as well as people pedaling surreys on the walkways. There were koy fish in the canal and no swimming signs. There are bridges that cross over the canal and underneath those bridges there are painted murals. It is very clean and calm.

I had read that there was a Congressional Medal of Honor Memorial along the canal. The Memorial according to the visitor guide “celebrates the 3,456 people who have received our country’s highest award of military valor. Their names are on 27 curving glass panels at this one-acre memorial, which represents conflicts dating back to the Civil War all the way through the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.” I was awed by the sheer number of people who have received “this highest military honor for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.” I am grateful to those who give so much for my freedoms.

My time of wandering was growing short and I needed something to eat before my next plenary session so I continued on for a short distance and then ascended a stairway back up to street level. At the top of the stairs was a very large piece of black granite that looked like it had be broken in two. I thought I have stumbled upon a September 11 Memorial and I was right. It said “September 11, 2001 we will never forget.” Go figure! I was struck again by the fact that my personal lose is in the midst of a national tragedy. I actually said thank you to Indianapolis. The memorial is well done. There are two large pieces of World Trade Center steel placed the way the towers stood. There is an eagle on top of one of the “towers”. There are also 4 smaller pieces of granite that act as a timeline – first plane hits tower, second plane hits tower, plane hits Pentagon and plane crashes in Pennsylvania. Each has an etching of either WTC1, WTC2, Pentagon and a PA map.

I took a bunch of photos which will have to be posted when I get home. I have a new camera and will need to download or is it upload those photos to my computer before I share them. I will share them later in the week. Lesson learned about traveling this week. Walk in a different direction and you may find something beautiful or meaningful or both.

    • Travel Tuesdays – S1E12 – airport observations

Posted at 9:11 am by missannsays, on June 19, 2013

Travel Tuesdays is a day late due to no “free” internet in room.

Today I flew from Newark (EWR) to Indianapolis, IN (IND). A few observations:

1.Those budget cuts you hear about on the radio are real. There was one TSA agent checking boarding passes and id’s at the security checkpoint in terminal A. One?!?

2.The lady in line behind me, who was so worried about the slow moving line, did nothing to help the line move faster. Case in point. She was carrying an open bottle of water and she didn’t have her boarding pass or identification out. Oh and some way or the other, she ended up in front of me. The TSA agent did call her forward when she stated she was going to miss her flight but she wasn’t ready. In case you were wondering, everyone else in line was rolling their eyes and shaking their heads but in the friendliest way.

3.For some reason unbeknownst to me, I am the person who gets either the full body scan and/or the hand swap. Today it was both.

4.Parents traveling with multiple children will do anything to keep them quiet at the airport. I saw a family of five with the 3 children being under the age of 8. Mom and dad were eating sandwiches and each child had a giant double chocolate muffin. The kids seemed to love their muffins, parents had a few moments of sanity and many wipes were available for the clean up after “lunch”. These were obviously seasoned traveler parents.

      5. I wanted to be super organized for this trip. Ten days in a long time to be away and I didn’t want a big suitcase. So, I had my list of clothing. Colored coded two tops per one bottom. I limited my shoes. I decided to think of this trip as a test run for Japan. Only problem was when I got to the airport, I didn’t have my passport. I always travel with my passport as my form of identification. No worries for this trip, my driver’s license would work as id but that won’t fly for Japan. Oh, the best laid plans.

      6. The flight from EWR to IND is the perfect length – under 2 hours. By the time you are wondering how much longer will it be, it is time to land. 🙂

    • Travel Tuesdays – S1E10 – summer travel plans

Posted at 5:33 pm by missannsays, on June 4, 2013

I am a planner.  I make lists. I make lists on my iPhone and I write them on paper. So summer vacations are thought about, researched and planned. This coming summer is shaping up to be busy. One summer event has been on my calendar for over a year. A second summer trip has been spoken about for a few years and is finally planned and  happening. And a third summer trip was a total surprise.

Over a year ago I was elected to be a delegate to General Assembly for the Church of the Nazarene  in Indianapolis, Indiana. I also have the opportunity of attending General Convention due to my District position as Children’s Ministries Director. I have had the privilege of attending General Convention in San Antonio, TX in 1997, Indianapolis, IN in 2001 and 2005 and Orlando, FL in 2009. I was also a delegate to General Assembly in 2005 and 2009. I thoroughly enjoy both events. I love learning new things at the workshops, and exchanging ideas.  I love listening to the discussion about issues and voting on policy. I love volunteering with World Quiz registration and making connections with people. But my favorite thing about General Assembly and General Convention is the worship services. There is something about worshipping in a service with thousands of people from all over the world.  It is an amazing experience.

I will sleep in my own bed for 5 nights and then it is family vacation – yeah!!! My girls and their guys are joining me in Edinburgh, Scotland for a week. Meghan and I had spent a long weekend in Edinburgh a few years ago and we just loved it. We had decided we needed to do that trip for family vacation. Edinburgh is full of old buildings, gardens, cobble stone streets, little pubs and shops. We are renting an apartment for the week so we can cook some of our meals and also have room to spread out. Plus renting a place feels more like you are living there and I love that feeling of becoming part of a city or town. My girls and their guys will spend a couple of days doing their own thing before they travel back home. I will spend a week in Oxford, England exploring the city I was born in and then will travel to stay with family for another week before heading back to the USA.

I will sleep 7 nights in my own bed and then travel to Japan as a representative of the Tribute Center. Unbelievable!!!  I am humbled to have been invited to travel to Japan with some of my fellow docents. As stated by Lee Ilepi:

“Finally after waiting to hear confirmation from American Airlines, we can announce that there will be a second trip to Japan that will take place in August.  The purpose of this second outreach trip is to provide support to the victims of the earthquake and tsunami of 3/11, and revisit communities that were visited by the first group back in October, showing our ongoing commitment to the people who experienced loss.  Our experience as a community has grown over the past 7 years, and we feel grateful that we are now able to provide support to others who have experienced disasters.  Our trip to Japan is the first major outreach that we have undertaken and we hope that we can reach out to people in other places in the future as well.”

I have purchased an iPad mini so I can write about my experiences and I hope to share some of them with you. My Facebook friends have read about the “free camera” which will come in very handy. I am ever amazed at the opportunities that I have been given.  I am so blest. Proverbs 3:4-5  states ” Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

    • big horses, beer and a train

Posted at 10:51 pm by missannsays, on June 3, 2013

This post shows how random I truly am. While driving into the city today, I heard that Senator Frank Lautenberg had died.  My sister  was an intern for Senator Lautenberg one summer.  Hearing of his passing reminded  me of a trip I had taken to visit her while she was in  Washington DC. That same summer Bruce had wanted to attend a Firefighter Convention in Baltimore . So we decided to include the Firefighter Convention, the Washington DC trip and a trip to Kansas in our summer vacation plans. We would stay at hotels in Baltimore and Washington then tent camp in St Louis and continue onto Bruce’s sister’s home in Kansas.

There are a couple of funny antidotes from that trip that still make me smile or is it cringe?!? Emily wondering “where the seatbelts were on the train?” Meghan being folded into the new umbrella stroller as we crossed the street. But the thing I always remember was when we returned from this adventure and people asked my kids “so what did you do on your big trip?” My girls responded “we saw the big horses at the place they make beer!” Did I mention they had been to the Baltimore Aquarium, ridden the train from Baltimore to Washington DC, had a private tour via my sister of the Capitol and even gone in the Senate chambers when it was in session. And we visited the Air and Space Museum of the Smithsonian, driven by all the Memorials at night, swam in the hotel’s rooftop pool, seen the Arch in St Louis and visited the St Louis Zoo. And the *Anheuser Busch tour was the thing they liked best. Oh, I did I mention they were 4 and 7 years old. And people especially church people give you funny looks when your kids talk about “the place they make beer.” Still makes me laugh.

The other note worthy story  happened on the journey home. When we left Kansas, we drove back to St Louis for our first stop.  It was later than we had planned and it was raining. As Bruce got out of the truck to  register us, I said “see if one of the cabins is available.”  When he returned, he informed me “there were no cabins and the train runs right by here.” I didn’t really pay attention to the train comment. Setting up a tent and fixing dinner in the rain with two young children was not my idea of fun but “we” muddled through. The girls sat in the pickup truck as we set up the tent and some way or the other I made dinner. We cleaned up and crawled into our sleeping bags.  I looked at Bruce and said “this is the last tent camping trip I am doing.” And then in the middle of the night,  the ground  started rumbling and the train rolled by. In the Midwest the trains are long, very long and the ground shakes, really shakes.  And  I thought this is how the Native Americans felt when the white man came. In the morning the sun was shining and I could see that the train tracks were very close. Years later Bruce would “confess” that he didn’t ask about a cabin. He figured we had the tent so why not sleep in it. Oh, my!

*As I wrote this, I originally wrote Budweiser then I realized that was wrong. Obviously I wasn’t the beer drinker in the family. And my girls were right  Clydesdales were cool. 🙂
